Isabelle Reymen combines entrepreneurial thinking with a passion for design processes. Her initial degrees are in architecture and engineering (KULeuven). After graduation, she moved to the Stan Ackermans Institute at TU/e, where she studied design processes in Architecture, Mechanical Engineering and Software Engineering, and received her Ph.D. in Design Sciences at the department of Computing Sciences in 2001. During a short period as Assistant Professor in Design Management at Twente University, in the group of Construction Management and Engineering, her fascination for multidisciplinary design processes moved gradually to managing these design processes. During this period in Twente, she also co-supervised a Ph.D. student on the composition of design teams, together with the Human Performance Management Group at TU/e. By accepting a position at the TU/e School of Industrial Engineering in 2006, she decided to focus on design and innovation processes in the high-tech Brainport Eindhoven region. She got involved in research into the design of technology transfer offices and technology-based new ventures and developed a strong interest in the design of business models and new ventures. Very soon she became involved in teaching ‘design’ to management students and in campus-wide technology entrepreneurship classes. She has also contributed, in several taskforces, to reinforcing the engineering profile of the School of Industrial Engineering. In projects conducted within the TU/e strategic area Energy, she draws on her expertise in technology entrepreneurship as well as building design processes.
The current position of Isabelle Reymen is Professor of Design of Innovation Ecosystems in the Innovation, Technology Entrepreneurship and Marketing (ITEM) group at the School of Industrial Engineering at the TU/e. She conducts research on technology commercialization processes, business model innovation, and decision making logic in new business development. She aims for research that is relevant and useful for practice, via the development of design knowledge which is able to bridge science and practice. During a 3 months visit at Carnegie Mellon University and later on via several visits to Case Western Reserve University, she is involved in the worldwide network of scholars bringing design sciences to management. She was granted 4 EU projects on entrepreneurial topics, of which one as project leader with TU/e as lead partner. She is one of a very small group of design researchers who have several publications in ISI ranked Architecture and Building journals. Furthermore she has published in leading design journals like Design Studies and Research in Engineering Design. Her recent work has been published in Journal of Product Innovation Management, R&D Management, and other journals.
