The Innovation, Technology Entrepreneurship & Marketing (ITEM) group is part of the department of Industrial Engineering & Innovation Sciences at Eindhoven University of Technology. The group consists of faculty, Ph.D. candidates and staff who participate in and contribute to the research, educational and business program of the ITEM group. This group focuses on understanding and improving New Product and Business Development Processes and is one of the leading programs in Europe in terms of quality, impact, productivity and societal relevance. Part of the group's success is its close cooperation and collaboration with business, particularly managers involved in innovation, both upstream (R&D, fuzzy front end, R&D portfolio management) and downstream (marketing/sales/service, market launch, getting ideas from the market).
The group's program emphasizes means for measuring and improving the process of conceiving, developing, and launching new products and businesses. As such, it encompasses both strategic and operational activities of new product and business development. Understanding the innovation process, developing tools to enhance innovation process productivity and quality, and connecting R&D and marketing/sales are dominant topics in the group's research and its projects with companies. Although the group studies innovation processes in general, the emphasis is on high-tech industries in particular.
The ITEM group's goal is to train ambitious young students and turn them into innovation managers. However, also offering advice and additional training to practitioners is considered important. "Our students are very entrpreneurial and we encourage them to set up their own business," says Prof. Langerak, Chair of the ITEM group. "By closely collaborating with colleagues from the TU/e Innovation Lab, we help them realize their ideas.
The ITEM group's faculty teaches bachelor, master, executive and PhD courses on a broad range of Innovation, Technology Entrepreneurship and Marketing topics. These courses are generally evaluated as the best in their respective programs. In addition, its faculty contributes to post-experience management education, e.g. at TiasNimbas, an internationally top ranked Dutch business school.
